The Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow is to stage the world premiere next week of a collaboration between the Chieftains — high priests of Irish folk music — and the American guitarist Ry Cooder. They will be celebrating the near-forgotten story of the San Patricio Battalion — a band of more than 800 Irish-American immigrants who deserted the United States Army to join the Mexican side during the US-Mexican War of 1846–1848.
