The ghost of Layne Staley looms large on “Black Gives Way to Blue,” Alice in Chains’ fourth studio album and first in 14 years. The troubled and drug-saddled singer was found dead in his condominium April 19, 2002. An autopsy revealed Staley had died from a mixture of heroin and cocaine 14 days before the discovery of his body.
